MGA were engaged to provide estimating support to the DFS stage estimate for the proposed mineral sands mine at Cataby, WA. With input from the project team MGA were responsible for delivering the Direct and Indirect cost component of the estimate.

 

Project Description

The proposed mineral sands mine at Cataby will include a wet concentrator plant, two mining units, a wet high intensity magnetic separator and UCC/Hydrosizers.

Infrastructure including Main Roads WA intersection upgrades, new accommodation camp, haul road & access road construction, mine buildings and utilities, will also form part of the project.

 

Key Challenges

To ensure the DFS estimate was substantiated to achieve the Iluka prescribed +/-  accuracy levels and all direct and indirect project costs were included.

Review / benchmarking of contractors & suppliers budget pricing, to verify inclusions and exclusions, together with a detailed examination of the supplied Owners costs.

Review of project team provided estimate quantities, together with Contractor / Supplier take-offs, to confirm the DFS Scope of Work and drawings were represented.

Complete the DFS estimate in a timely manner to meet the internal Iluka Financial Investment Decision by the Board of Directors.

 

Outcomes

The estimate was completed on time and within the budgets set and this allowed the Definitive Feasibility Study to be presented for board financial approval.

The DFS estimate package contained a Basis Of Estimate document that clearly defined the projects inclusions / exclusions and contained project team sign-off sheets for each of the estimate main cost headings.
